"How much will it cost?" is the first question almost everyone asks — and it's a fair one. The honest answer is it depends, but that's not very helpful, so let me explain what actually drives the price and give you some realistic ranges to plan around.
Every kitchen is different, so treat these as a guide, not a quote. The only way to know your number is a free site visit and a detailed estimate.
What drives the cost
A kitchen renovation price comes down to a handful of big levers:
- Size and layout. More cabinetry and benchtop means more materials and labour. Changing the layout — moving the sink, plumbing or walls — adds trades and cost.
- Cabinetry quality. This is the heart of the kitchen. Solid, custom-built cabinetry costs more than flat-pack but lasts decades and fits your space exactly.
- Benchtops. Laminate is the most affordable; engineered stone is mid-to-premium; natural stone is premium. (We covered the trade-offs in our benchtop guide.)
- Appliances. Easy to overlook, but a full appliance package can be a big slice of the budget.
- Hidden work. Electrical, plumbing, splashbacks, flooring and any structural changes all add up.
Rough budget ranges
As a very rough guide for a Gisborne kitchen:
- Budget refresh — new doors, benchtop and hardware on a sound existing layout. The most affordable way to transform a kitchen.
- Mid-range renovation — new custom cabinetry, a quality benchtop and a tidy-up of the existing layout. This is where most of our projects sit.
- Full premium renovation — a new layout, premium materials, integrated appliances and feature joinery.
Where you land depends far more on your choices than on the room itself. The same kitchen can be built three different ways at three different prices.
How to get the most value
After years of doing this, here's where I'd put your money:
- Spend on cabinetry. It's what you touch every day and what holds everything together. Good cabinetry quietly makes a kitchen feel expensive.
- Be realistic about the layout. Keeping plumbing and major services roughly where they are saves real money. Move them only if the layout genuinely needs it.
- Choose finishes you'll still like in ten years. Trend colours date; classic finishes don't. You can always change handles and paint later — cabinetry, not so easily.
- Get one point of contact. When the same team designs, builds and installs, there are no gaps for cost and delays to creep in. That's exactly how we work.
No surprises
The worst part of any renovation is the unexpected bill. We give you a clear, detailed quote up front and lock in the design before anything is ordered — so the price you agree to is the price you pay, and your project is backed by our 5-year workmanship warranty.
